Name: Campren McMillin
Alias: Charley Campbell
Physical Description: 6' 1". Tired, tired eyes. Long and lanky, this guy really needs a sandwich. Except he probably couldn't afford one.
Chosen by: Mudd
Gift description: 'Protection' on his coat.
He's the sort of guy that's usually portrayed as the bumbling minion of the Big Bad- not the hero of the story.
For starters, he's a total ditz. He has trouble paying attention to the people and situations around him. He always seems distracted, and his answer to every question is "what?"
On top of that, he's also a coward. He runs away from conflict and tries to avoid problems whenever they surface-- which, in his mind, is all the time. He's incredibly jumpy and is sometimes startled by his own shadow. Even when talking with an affable old lady, Campren appears terrified out of his mind. It's as if he always expects the worst out of people.
I wish I could say that he was redeemable in the way of morality, but sadly, he hasn't got much to show for in that department either. He's been on the lam ever since the 'incident,' and he makes his living through pickpocketing and shoplifting.
Fictional characters don't get enough credit. Authors throw all sorts of traumatic trials and unspeakable horrors in their direction, and yet the characters always seem to pull through.
Your world is under attack? You'll end up saving it.
Your lover cheats on you? You'll meet someone better in a crazy misadventure.
You were orphaned as a child? You'll become a flippin' superhero.
But not everyone is quite so good at weathering the author's storms. Take Campren, for example.
He had a reasonably happy childhood, but after a series of increasingly odd mishaps, his life slowly unwound. And unlike Batman, he hasn't handled things very well.
He's always been told that the problems in his life weren't caused by any one person: they were just acts of fate.
Campren has trouble believing this.
. . . Oh, and the bird? It's been following him ever since the dance studio burned down.
It'll make sense later, I promise.
